Welcome to the Mammoth Lakes Basin where outdoor activities and scenic beauty await.

In summer, the Mammoth Lakes Basin offers unparalleled access to sweeping vistas, crystal clear lakes, and endless exploration via the trail system. In winter, when the snow falls the “Lakes Basin” turns into a haven for strolling, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing, with access to Tamarack Cross Country Ski Center’s 19+ miles of groomed Nordic track. It is also an access point for backcountry skiing and snowboarding.

Unlike in summer, however, Lake Mary Road, which takes you into the Lakes Basin, undergoes a winter vehicle closure. The Winter Public Access Corridor becomes your gateway to exploring the Lakes Basin this time of year. It starts at the road closure and is free to access for non-motorized travel. Due to the limited amount of parking, however, the area often becomes congested, which means getting to winter in the Lakes Basin is better on the bus!

How to get to the Lakes Basin

Getting to the vehicle closure is easy with FREE public transportation. Use the Orange Line Shuttle, which runs daily from the Village to the closure every 30 minutes. Ski equipment, snowshoes, and a backpack full of supplies can easily be carried onto the shuttle. All you have to do is catch the bus and you’re there! No getting frustrated driving around looking for a parking spot. You can even bring your furry friend (leashed and muzzled) on the bus, so they don’t miss out on the adventure.

Make sure to check the schedule for the last bus of the day.

If you must drive, please note there are approximately 30 parking spaces available. There is no parking on the east side of Lake Mary Road and if parking on the west side be sure to pull off to the side as much as possible. Use extreme caution while driving in this area as there are pedestrians on the road and the road may be icy. BE PATIENT. BE CONSIDERATE. BE KIND and please keep Mammoth Lakes unreal by leaving this place a little better than you found it.
